Introduction: Women whose nipples are retracted have not only an aesthetic problem, and consequently a lack of self-confidence, but often a medical problem. In these situations, it is almost impossible to breastfeed, and quite often can come to a standstill of secretions, which can result in infection. Hence, the nipple surgery is not only performed in order to satisfy the aesthetic flaws of patients, but it is also performed for medical justified reasons. However, too large nipples, or nipples that after extensive surgery are partially or completely missing may again be reconstructed.
Technique: Depending on the nipple changes, shape and position, there are a variety of techniques and approaches that can be used for nipple correction. The most common applied techniques are used in order to preserve maximum of mammary gland ducts, and thus the patient’s ability to breastfeed. The techniques that do not preserve tubules can also be applied, but they are more reserved for patients who are not planning more children.
Duration and Anesthesia: The nipple surgeries are outpatient procedures and they are performed under local anesthesia. The duration of the procedure varies from 30 minutes to an hour.
Recovery: After the interventions on the nipples, there is no need for a long rest. Soon after the surgery you can resume your daily routine.
Complications: Complications after nipple surgery are very rare.
